Manuscript. Late Nineteenth century hand-written travel journal, with illustrations. Attributed to 'Mary Ann Fothergill'. A record of a residence in Switzerland during the years 1817 & 1818. With 50 plates and drawings - of which 22 are original, 12 being coloured. 310 pages in length. The first 274 pages are the travel record, the remaining pages are a memoir of the author and both her immediate and extended family. The hand-writing is legible throughout. The first 110 pages appear to be in the hand of Mary Ann, then from page 111 to the end the hand changes to that of the transcriber, her sister, Marianne Fothergill - as detailed in the memoirs section at the rear of the work. The original illustrations are attributed to either 'Ann Reynolds' or 'Elizabeth Fothergill'. In the dedication, the author states how this journey had been a solo-enterprise 'sanctioned and encouraged by a beloved friend and relation, to whom, in the fondness of my heart I had thought to relate all my adventures, and to dedicate the description of my Rambles in Switzerland', reading on it would appear this relation sadly pre-deceased the original author. Bookplate to front paste-down for 'Charles Forbes, Esq.' and another to rear paste-down for 'Mary Forbes', again these would appear to be relations of the author and her sister. Loosely inserted are two hand-written poems dedicated to Mary Forbes from Marianne Fothergill. Oblong format album, measures: 12' x 8.5' approx. Rubbed, with surface wear and abrasions. Somewhat shaken, with inner-hinges tender, several of the later leaves have come loose. Generally clean within, coloured illustrations remain bright. A conscientious and affectionate work. Unique item.
